The Psychology Online Course covers the following Units:-

  • Unit 1: The Science of Psychology

In this first unit we will introduce you to the methods and approaches adopted by psychological researchers. You will discover that psychology as a science is relatively young compared to other sciences, and you will see how psychological research has evolved to look at different aspects of humans in different ways. In the first part of the module we will take you through a brief history of this fascinating subject so that you can appreciate how the different approaches relate to each other.

  • Unit 2: How We Learn

In Unit 2, we focus on the different ways in which psychologists have studied how people and animals learn. Learning is central to our development, as it is through learning that our understanding of how the world works, and our role within it, becomes fuller.

  • Unit 3: How We Develop

In Unit 3, we examine some of the main psychological theories about human development. We will see that learning itself can only be understood in relation to the way our thinking develops as we mature.

  • Unit 4: Relating to others

In Unit 4, we introduce you to the processes involved in our everyday understanding of others' actions, and how these processes affect our social relationships.

  • Unit 5: Social influence

In Unit 5, we explore how psychologists have studied the different ways in which we are influenced by other people, and how we can influence others.

  • Unit 6: Your Brain: A User's Guide

In Unit 6, we examine the structure of the brain and explore how different parts of the brain tend to be associated with different functions. We also look at how the brain copes with damage and change.

  • Unit 7: Consciousness and the Brain

In Unit 7, we turn our attention to the relationship between brain activity and conscious experience. Consciousness continues to be a challenge for psychologists, but we discover how research is beginning to address this challenge. We also consider altered states of consciousness such as dreams as well as those experienced through drugs, hypnosis, and meditation.

  • Unit 8: Attention and Thinking

In Unit 8, we examine the processes involved in how we attend to information in our environment, how we interpret that information, and what we do with that information. We focus on what psychologists have learned from studying the mental processes involved in attention and thinking.

  • Unit 9: Memory

In Unit 9, we focus on processes involved in memory. We will discover the different types of memory and the biases involved in memory. We also introduce you to ways of improving your own memory.

  • Unit 10: Personality

In Unit 10, we explore the different ways in which psychologists have studied personality. We will look at how researchers try to measure personality and also how they try to explain why there seem to be so many different types of personality.

  • Unit 11: Intelligence

In Unit 11, we explore the different ways in which psychologists have studied personality. We will look at how researchers try to measure personality and also how they try to explain why there seem to be so many different types of personality.

  • Unit 12: Applying Psychology

In this final unit we do our best to bring things together by looking at how findings from research in psychology can be applied to our everyday lives. One of the main aims of this course was to enable you to understand yourself a little better. To help you gain some insight into why you do things that you do.
