This course will provide the basic but essentials skills of general mechanical workshop practice by using hand-fitting techniques, machining skills (including milling, turning and grinding), and will provide learners with safe, standard and well-proven workshop practices, allowing them to fully utilise the College's excellent facilities. Learners will be able to work on their own projects following discussion with the course tutor.

Materials for this course will need to be paid for separately to the course depending on what the project and materials used.

For this course you will need to provide your own safety boots and overalls to enable you to work safely in the workshops. Boots and overalls are available to purchase from the college at a cost of £30 overalls and £20 safety boots

Topic areas covered include:
1) General Health and Safety
2) Practice demonstration of how to set up lathes and milling machines
3) Turning techniques to include sliding and surfacing, chamfer, undercutting, threading, drilling and more
4) Milling techniques to include flat, square, angles surfaces and slots
5) Use of basic measuring tools such as Micrometres and Vernier callipers
6) Hand skills using files, squares, scribers, punches and hacksaws
7) Drilling techniques

Course programme

Advanced level course on Machine shop practices in the evenings, or a day programme certificated by EAL- Diploma in Engineering and Technology Level 2 and 3.

There is no formal entry criteria for this course. A general interest in machining would be a benefit.
