Introduction to Journalism

A day-time beginners course which covers the basics of news and features journalism.

The classes will begin at 10:00 am until 5:00 pm.

Day 1: News UK newspaper market, what is news, intros, the inverted pyramid, structure, sources, questions, facts, the 5 Ws, quotes, interviewing for news, making your story stand up, police, councils, press officers

Day 2: News/Features Where to find news, avoiding the mistakes journalists make, delayed drops, meeting your deadlines, news in brief, news vs features, what is a feature, feature intros, endings, meeting the brief, finding a hook

Day 3: Features/Law Feature ideas, researching your subject, getting the best quotes, body language, killer questions, interviewing for features, shaping your feature, vox pops, libel, defences, the PCC, the courts,

Q&A
Assignments: Students will work on news reports, features and interviews during the course.
Books: Journalism and Newswriting (London School of Journalism 2009). (cost included in course fees)

The course will run again in May 2010.
