Course programme
This course looks at the art of Non-Western countries, focusing specifically on the colonies and native cultures that remain outside of the popular Western model of art history. We look at different peoples and periods of history examining unique artistic attributes and investigating the influences they have had on Western art. The course is taught over a series of image-based lectures, some of which will involve museum visits (British Museum).

• Japanese and Chinese art
• Art of the pacific colonies
• American art
• Primitivism
• Orientalism
• Colonisation
Outcomes:
You will gain an insight into the side of Art History that is usually confined to specialist study or merely referenced in Western art histories. Knowledge of specific cultures including Asian, African and Native American, will be gained as well as a broader view on how such cultures have a role to play in art history as a whole.
