Course Summary:
This one-year course introduces learners to working in the sports sector - from leisure centre work, gym instruction and sports coaching to sports therapy, psychology and nutrition. Emphasis is placed on skills development at this level and so a supportive programme of maths and English is compulsory within the course.
Entry requirements
The course is designed for learners with low-level GCSE grades (3-1) or limited qualification achievements. It is essential that you show a commitment to maintaining high standards of behaviour and attendance and to meeting deadlines. Candidates will be invited for an interview and screening test as part of the application process. You are welcome to attend the Sport Information Evenings held at the College throughout the year for further details.

Course programme

Course Content: The programme will enhance your understanding in: Searching for sports jobs Participation in exercise programmes Maths skills Working in a sport and leisure environment Taking part in sport Health and fitness English skills Volunteering You will develop your skills in maths and English to support your main programme of study, help your future progression and enhance your life skills. You will need to be aware that certain volunteering events take place at weekends and you will be expected to attend these or find work experience in your free time. How will I be assessed? Assessment methods will vary. You are expected to build a portfolio of evidence for each unit. Assessments will include presentations, essays, workbooks, discussions, practical performance, viva, physical testing and externally set exam assessments. You will need to meet deadlines and work on multiple tasks throughout the year. Maths and English will be assessed through a controlled assessment or final exam. Are there any additional costs or specialist equipment required? You are expected to purchase a uniform to wear at College and for practical sessions. Kit costs vary depending on the items purchased and the cost is non-refundable once the order has been placed. You are also asked to contribute towards the end-of-year celebration event and yearly gym membership. Total costs are approximately £140. There may be additional events during the year to which you may be asked to contribute towards. Financial assistance is available, depending on your circumstances. What can I do after this course? Further study This course is designed to allow you to move to other Sport courses to develop your skills further, or to another course in other areas of study. This will be dependent on attendance, behaviour and references from teaching staff. The achievement of maths and English is a priority for progression. Courses that would be suitable are: Leadership and Security Skills for the Public Services Skills for Sport Gym and Fitness Instruction Careers The skills you gain are transferable to a wide range of career areas but will particularly enable you to enter organisations within the sport and leisure sector.
