BTEC National Award/Diploma

What's it all about?:
If you are interested in a career in IT and are unsure about exactly which area (hardware, software, networking, business) to focus on, then this course allows you to experience them all - and then pick the one you like.

This course starts as a national award which gives you a sample of much of the IT industry's subjects. On Ssccessful completion of the award you can progress to the national diploma, where you focus on your chose subject - hardware, software, networking or business.

The diploma part of this course allows you to hone your skills in your specific subject to allow you to progress into higher education or employment with ease.

Progression:
On completion of the national award you can:
  • continue to the national diploma in your chosen subject
  • gain entry level employment within the IT industry.

On completion of the national diploma you can:
  • continue to higher education courses within the College
  • continue to higher education courses at a university
  • gain trainee level employment within the IT industry.


Entry Requirements:
In our experience in order to be successful on this level of course you will need one of the following:
• four to five* GCSEs at grades A*-C (including English and maths)
• an intermediate GNVQ in a related subject
• a BTEC first diploma in a related subject
• an NVQ Level 2/technical certificate in a related subject
• successful completion of an apprenticeship course
• successful completion of the Gateway/Newstart course
• equivalent qualifications or relevant work experience.

* A level candidates will be expected to have five GCSEs

In addition to the entry requirements above, you will need to satisfactorily complete an assignment and bring it with you to your interview.

Duration: Two years Course Overview
What does the course involve?:

The national award consists of six units including:
  • programming
  • maintaining computer systems
  • communications and network technology.

The national diploma consists of a wide range of units (dependant upon your subject focus). Some of these include:
  • IT repair and troubleshooting
  • media subjects
  • e-business subjects
  • programming.


When can I study?:
Full-time

Are there any exams?:
A variety of assessment methods are used including time constrained assessments, assignments, case studies, observations and projects. There is also a requirement to complete key skills at level 3 and an environmental awareness unit. This involves producing a portfolio and passing externally set tests.
