In order to be selected for this apprenticeship, you will need to apply for an apprenticeship through our website and or the government website You will also need communication skills and an ability to work with many different professionals in a typical It support environment. IT literacy is important to use software in the workplace. Finally, you must have the drive to complete the demands of the apprenticeship course. You will also need to demonstrate commitment to learning while working and spending 20% of your working hours completing off-the-job training.

Course programme

Year 1

Knowledge and understanding is assessed on the programme through knowledge modules and vendor or professional qualifications.

You will cover five knowledge modules. The bread and depth of the modules will give you the confidence and understanding that you will use in your work place. This is the part of the apprenticeship where you will study one day a week at Leicester College. In addition there are further modules that will expand your range and skills in programming/scripting, operating systems, cloud technologies and company IT business skills. The following knowledge Modules are as follows.

Module 1 is Networking and Architecture (for level 3 Infrastructure Technician Apprenticeships). Working knowledge of: a range of cabling and connectivity, the various types of antennas and wireless systems and IT test equipment.

Module 2 covers Mobile and Operating Systems. In this module you will study and understands the similarities, differences and benefits of the current Operating Systems available. Also, you will understand how to operate remotely and how to deploy and securely integrate mobile devices.

Module 3 covers Cloud Services. You will gain an understanding and working knowledge of Cloud and Cloud Services and the importance of disaster recovery and how a disaster recovery plan works and their role within it. Modules and 4 and 5 will be completed in the final phase at the start of year two.

Technical competencies.

As well as covering the knowledge modules you will gain technical competencies. Technical competencies include communications, IT security, remote infrastructure, data, problem solving, workflow management, health and safety and performance, for the technical competencies you will build a portfolio of evidence of how you are meeting these competencies at work. You will build up this portfolio by uploading your evidence online using a smart assessor. The evidence will be in form of screenshots, written explanations, records and demonstrations where appropriate.


How the work is done.

Finally you will learn how the work is done. In your work place you will undertake work that is more complex, more critical or more difficult. You will show how you work independently and take responsibility and initiative. You will evidence by demonstrating an ability to extend or enhance your approach to work and the quality of outcomes. You will not just solve the problem but explore all known options to do it better, more efficiently, more elegantly or to better meet customer needs.

Year 2

In the second year of the apprenticeship you will complete module 4 which covers Coding and Logic. In this module you will understand working/scripting at command line: particularly when supporting any server work. You will understand and recognise different coding and language as well as understanding application life cycle management. You will also cover understand algorithms and data structures and web page development. Finally, module 5 will cover business processes. In this module you will cover security operating procedures and understanding and ability to work confidentiality. You will understand how to work within the company operating procedures and ability to comply with Data Protection. Also, you will understand company IT requirements and company IT systems and platforms. You will understand company IT business required skills and understand software life cycles as well as desktop applications, messaging systems, document management.

As first line support. As issues are reported, you will interpret, log and understand them for investigation and resolution. As well as providing support, responsible for the implementation of software and managing and maintaining the company’s own network infrastructure. Your key responsibilities will be to interpret and log requests and support cases into the system, provide an initial response to customers, investigate and replicate issues, provide regular updates to clients and other internal projects as required.

End point assessment. At the end of the apprenticeship you will have an end point assessment by the City Guilds of London Institute.

Additional information

The apprenticeship standard will also be assessed by the City Guilds of London Institute. Assessment for this apprenticeship is largely via a portfolio of evidence gathered at work and an End Point Assessment (EPA) after your employer deems an apprentice competent. – A computer based exam at Leicester College. You will also be regularly visited at work by your Trainer Assessor from Leicester College, who will support you to achieve the standard required. Towards the end of your course, a practical observation and a professional discussion will be conducted by an independent assessor
