BTEC National IT Practitioners

WHY TAKE BTEC NATIONAL IT PRACTITIONERS?
If you have a keen interest in computers, in how they work and what they are used for, then BTEC National IT is the right course for you. If your career plans are a little uncertain BTEC National IT is a nationally recognised qualification, that goes well with many degrees and careers.

WHAT ARE THE KEY AREAS OF STUDY?
In the first year, all students will study Communication and Employability Skills for IT, Computer Systems, Digital Graphics and Computers, Computer Animation, and IT Systems Analysis and Design. Those on the Diploma course will also study Event Driven Programming, Maintaining Computers and Advanced Database Skills.

In the second year all students will study an IT Project. Communication Technologies, Website Production and Management, Installing and Upgrading Software, and Information systems will be covered. Diploma students will also take Client side Customisation of Web Pages, Controlling Systems Using IT, and Developing Computer Games.

WHAT SKILLS WILL I NEED AND DEVELOP?
You need to have an interest in computers as the course will form the major part of your timetable. No prior knowledge is assumed but a desire to learn and absorb new information is a great advantage. You will learn and develop a variety of skills such as programming, web design, graphics, animation, team work and practical computer maintenance.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?
There are no exams. All work is internally marked and then moderated by BTEC. The Certificate consists of six units in each year and the Diploma consists of nine units in each year. Assignments are criteria based and when sufficient criteria have been achieved, a pass, merit or distinction can be awarded for the unit. The unit grades are then added up and an overall course grade awarded.

PRIESTLEY EXTRA
The IT curriculum area organises lots of extra activities for students including trips abroad (France and Japan are our most recent) and visits to local museums and universities. You will be able to take part in enrichment activities such as designing robots, creating websites and playing games.
