Course programme
This course will be delivered as a full time course at level 1 in a single academic year. The academic week will be timetabled over two or three days.
The academic year runs from September to the following July.
WHAT ARE BTEC ITQs?
BTEC ITQs are new IT User qualifications spanning Entry Level 3 through to Level 3. They replace the old NVQ for IT Users qualifications. There are around 28 units at each level, covering a wide range of software applications, including multimedia, desktop publishing and presentation software. Units are highly practical and relatively small.
WHAT IS THE QUALIFICATION DESIGNED FOR?
Learners who are preparing for work or work experience. The qualification is an ideal starting point for progression to study at Level 2 (equivalent to GCSE) and beyond. The qualification will give the learner the opportunity to develop confidence, self-esteem and the knowledge and skills necessary to enter employment, return to work or seek new opportunities.
PROGRESSION
This qualification will sit within the Foundation Learning and will allow learners to progress, for example, to Level 2 qualifications, apprenticeships or skilled employment, or to supported employment.
Learners may progress to QCF units available at Levels 2 and 3.
WHAT WILL I STUDY?
The qualification consists of core and specialist units in computing subjects, Personal and Social Development and skills is ICT, Maths and English.
The computing units are worth 3 points each and you will need a minimum of 34 to succeed. The units are short, focussed and practical in nature; they cover a wide range of software applications.
HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?
There are no examinations. Assessment in all units is carried out using a mixture of

Task-based assessment
The course final outcome is a Pass. There are no higher grades.
HOW DO I APPLY?
You should have 2 GCSE passes at E or above but discretionary entry may be allowed.
It is expected that demand for places on this course will be high. You must complete the application form for full-time courses and submit it as early as possible. You will be invited for an interview with a department staff member in the College where you will be able to ask additional questions.
You will take part in a set of simple assessments that will be designed to assess your current skills so that we can provide learning that best meets your own needs.
