The University of St Andrews jazz courses were established in 1994 and since then have grown steadily in popularity.

The courses are aimed at professional, semi-professional and aspiring musicians, who are eager to develop their work in this style, either for performance or teaching.

The Advanced Diploma and Graduate Diploma run throughout the academic year and consist of study days, contact days and a final study weekend in St Andrews, combined with distance learning.

The courses are held in the Music Centre based at Younger Hall, North Street, St Andrews. This large building houses a concert hall seating up to 1,000 people and is the main concert venue in St Andrews. It hosts performances by professional and amateur musicians, including regular visits by the University’s Orchestra in Residence the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, a series of chamber music concerts by internationally renowned artists, weekly Wednesday lunchtime concerts, jazz nights and much more.

Course programme

Individual tuition by accredited teachers from beginner to advanced levels is available in voice, piano, organ, harpsichord, guitar, clarsach, bagpipes, recorder, percussion and all orchestral instruments.

We also run group classes for beginners in violin, guitar and bagpipes.

If you would like to receive tuition on an instrument for which we currently do not cater, please let us know, as we may be able to find a suitable teacher.

The Music Centre has a number of instrumental and vocal scholarships available to University students, awarded on a competitive basis, which cover the cost of a year's tuition. In addition, a small number of awards are available annually to students in financial need, via the Hebdomadar's Music Fund.

Individuals receiving tuition must join the Music Centre and must also agree to our terms and conditions.
