Course programme

Journalism and the communications world in general are experiencing an exciting revolution and we want our graduates to have the skills they need to thrive in the new digital era. As the traditional boundaries between print, TV and radio disappear, this course explores how they converge in multimedia and online journalism. The course received a 94% student satisfaction score in the last National Student Survey (2015), 17% higher than the average for the sector and the best results of any university journalism course in the South East. National Student Survey, 2015 Multimedia journalism is the combination of old forms of media with the new; it is where journalism is today. To work in journalism in the 21st Century, our graduates will need to master both traditional and contemporary methods − which is why we teach everything from timeless newsgathering skills to social media monitoring and mobile journalism. The course offers the chance to do this with stimulating and engaging modules that give students the chance to acquire skills in print, radio and TV separately and together in a fresh multimedia environment. Our approach is practical and hands on. We believe you learn more and enjoy it more if you are practicing what we teach. Taught by seasoned media professionals and academics, as well as regular sessions from senior journalists in the industry, the course concentrates on practical workshops across all media, giving students the chance to try out their skills in Newsdays and live studio events. 80% of our graduates have a graduate-level job (or are in further study) when surveyed six months after graduation according to the latest survey of Destinations of Leavers from Higher education. National Student Survey, 2015 The course is accredited by the Broadcast Journalism Training Council who described it as a “Gold Star’” course. They also praised our strategy for delivering professional skills, centred around print, broadcast, and described online Newsdays, as “exemplary.” Our External Examiner, Sarah Rowlands, co-author of The Broadcast Journalism Handbook, described the online journalism work at Canterbury Christ Church University as “cutting edge” and “amongst the best student online work I’ve ever seen.” Overall student satisfaction with this course was 94% in the 2015 National Student Survey. 80% of our graduates have a graduate-level job or are in further study when surveyed six months after graduation, according to the latest survey of Destinations of Leavers from Higher Education. Top reason to choose this course Taught by media professionals with substantial experience of working at senior levels in journalism. Small and friendly, but packed full of practical skills, and that’s why we have such a high student satisfaction rating and employment record for our graduates. That close relationship continues through to the industry, as our graduates return to help current students find their first jobs and placements. "Every tutor knew my name and it felt like they really cared. I got my first job at CNET two months after leaving and I’m sure it was my multimedia skills that gave me the edge over all the other applicants. I had to script my own reviews, film, present and edit at speed. I’m now at Digital Spy still using those skills I learnt at Christchurch.” Amie Parker Williams Video reporter, Digital Spy Awards John McGhie –TV and Online Tutor.
