Course detail Description

The King’s International Foundation – Biology & Chemistry and the Extended King's International Foundation - Biology and Chemistry course is jointly delivered by the King's English Language Centre, the Faculty of Natural & Mathematical Sciences and the Faculty of Life Sciences & Medicine.

It provides a structured journey for you to enter into a science-based undergraduate degree at King’s. You will learn essential skills to prepare you for the demands of undergraduate study including:

  • Critical thinking
  • Essay writing
  • Research
  • Exam techniques
  • Presentation skills

By the end of the course, you will have improved your overall academic skills, your academic language and have a more detailed understanding of your chosen academic subject.

During the first semester, you will receive dedicated support for making your university application through the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS).

You will also have the opportunity to take a range of optional International English Language Testing System (IELTS) classes and tutorials.

Teaching

A typical academic week includes an average of 16 contact hours, but some weeks will see a different number of contact hours. You are expected to commit to an average of 16 hours a week of independent study, including independent research tasks.

The course is taught through a combination of lectures, seminars, classes and laboratory-based practicals. You will be assigned a personal tutor who you will meet with on a regular basis to receive individual advice on your progress.

Assessment

The nature of assessment varies by module. Most modules are assessed through coursework and final examinations. In addition, some modules are assessed through presentations and practical laboratory examinations.

The study time and assessment methods detailed above are typical and give you a good indication of what to expect. However, they may change if the course modules change.

Progression

The King’s International Foundation – Biology & Chemistry course offers progression onto King’s undergraduate degrees such as:

Structure

Year 1

  • Science & Society

*You will either study English for Scientific Academic Purposes or Academic Expression & Critical Thinking, depending on your level of English when you start the course.

The English for Scientific Academic Purposes, Academic Expression & Critical Thinking and Science & Society modules are delivered by the King's English Language Centre.

The Biology module is taught by the relevant King’s department in the Faculty of Life Sciences & Medicine. The Chemistry module is taught by the relevant King’s department in the Faculty of Natural & Mathematical Sciences. This means that you are taught by King’s academics during your Foundation year.

All of the modules support your subject and linguistic skills development as they encourage you to analyse concepts and develop ideas in your chosen subject area.
