Why study this course In the Foundation year you will study three days per week. The focus will be on academic writing skills and numeracy, plus subject-specific content to fully prepare you for entry to an Undergraduate degree. If you are interested in the society in which you live, from issues to do with small-scale social issues to contemporary global ones, then this course will offer you not only an understanding of many of these issues but also will provide you with ways of seeing the social world and research skills to be able to make your own contributions to sociology and wider society.

Course programme

Who’s this course for? Designed for students wishing to study a broad range of theoretical, applied and topical subjects affecting our society. Modular structure At stage one, students are introduced to the main theories and core concepts of Sociology to allow students to begin to understand society and the structures inherent therein. There is also a focus at this stage on acdemic skills for study in higher education. Stage two contains further emphasis on skills for social sciences and employment. At this stage, topics such as global news and media audiences will be explored in greater depth. A vocational element wehrein future research careers and the skills and knowledge needed to enter them are outlined, providing students with the opportunities to network with prospective employers. At stage three a research project on a topic chosen by students is undertaken, relating to the proposed career path following graduation.

Additional information

Skills and experience gained Sociology units both deepen and extend understanding of concepts and theoretical frameworks central to an understanding of society. At the same time Sociology units apply sociological theory and concepts to substantive areas and issues central to an understanding of British society in the st century and its place in the world. Teaching is undertaken by staff who have recent or current expertise of conducting research in this discipline as well as staff with experience of working withing the human services and understand the value a Sociology degree has in contemporary life.
