"The machine lacquering has the function of giving this material an opaque effect. Thanks to this technique, particular designs and motifs can be created on the glass surface. The glasses called ""sandblasted"" are used inside homes or buildings of different nature such as offices and shops. The ""sandblasted"" glasses eliminate transparency but let the light pass and therefore, in addition to the aesthetic beauty of this technique, it is very functional: it guarantees privacy while maintaining full brightness. Lacquer, in a general sense, is a clear or colored varnish, which dries by evaporation of solvents and often also by a hardening process that produces a hard, durable finish that can take on any level of gloss from ultra-matte to ' extremely shiny and that can be further polished as needed. The term lacquer comes from the Sanskrit lakṣa which means ""one hundred thousand"", indicating the number of insects from which this element is secreted. In current parlance, the term lacquer is often used as a synonym for shellac. In reality, despite the similarities of the names, they are two different materials, which are not even connected to each other. Shellac is an insect resin secreted by the lacquer bug (Kerria lacca), which lives in India and Southeast Asia. The solvent of shellac is alcohol. The lacquer is based on cellulose nitrate (nitrocellulose) with the addition of resins to make it less fragile, and nitrocellulose in turn is obtained from wood pulp or from cotton waste (nitro-staple). The lacquer solvent is the lacquer thinner.
