Course programme

You will require one GCSE at Grade E or above in English or Maths, or equivalent qualifications at Entry level 3 or above. You may be home educated with a good record of consistent evaluation and improvement. A strong wish to work with horses is essential. You will be required to pass an interview and an initial assessment in order to be accepted onto the course. It is important to bring a reference from school or from someone who knows your capabilities (other than a family member) with you to the interview.


This is a one year course during which you will develop a range of practical stable management skills including feeding, handling, mucking out stables, recognising signs of good and poor health, grooming, tacking up and cleaning and maintaining horse tack. You will work under direct supervision of college staff, who will guide you with both your practical and written work.


The Level 1 Diploma in Land-based Studies (Horse Care) will form the main part of your Study Programme at College. Functional Skills English, Maths are a major part of the Study Programme and will be studies and enhanced throughout the year in preparation for progression to Level 2. Personal, social and employability skills are also an essential part of this course relating to employment within the equine sector. Theory work and assignments are included within the course and it is highly recommended you attend a practical work placement within the industry one day a week.
