A number of international and national schemes have been developed (including land capability classification, land suitability classification) and these have been used extensively over many years. Spatial information systems now provide the means by which the outputs from land evaluations can combined with other spatial data to improve land use decision making.

Course programme

Course structure Introduced by lecture presentations on land evaluation as a concept, land capability and land suitability classification. Agricultural land classification will be demonstrated using two contrasting soil pits at the Cranfield University Farm. A demonstration of field recording for Agricultural Land Classification will form a significant part of the afternoon activities. Please come equipped for visiting a farmland site with appropriate footwear and clothing.

  • Identify the range of input data required to undertake the evaluation
  • Manage the process of undertaking a land evaluation
