Programme Structure & Content

Language & Linguistics can be studied as a Joint element in a number of Honours degrees.

First Year
Entry to second year Language & Linguistics is normally dependent on your having achieved a pass in either Communication and Language in Contemporary Society or English Structure and Use (you are actively encouraged to take both courses). If you do not have a Higher or A Level (or equivalent) in a foreign language you are encouraged to take up one at Aberdeen.

Second Year
In second year, all Language & Linguistics students must normally take 60 credits from the following courses:

  • Sounds of English
  • History of Language in the British Isles
  • Introduction to French Linguistics
  • Philosophy of Language
  • Words and Meanings: Lexis and Semantics
  • Constructing Words and Meaning: Morphology

You will need to have studied prerequisite courses in French and Philosophy in first year to study these last two courses.

Third & Fourth Year (Honours)
At Honours level there is one core Language & Linguistics course: Language: Variation and Change, which discusses contemporary and historical aspects of the relationship between language and society. In addition there are a number of other Language & Linguistics courses dealing with topics such as the development of language in the 19th century; discourse analysis; sociolinguistic methodology; applied linguistics; language and identity; multilingualism; and the ways in which language develops and operates in colonial contexts.
