Description of Major
Studying History will equip you with transferable skills sought in today’s job market, world cultural literacy, and historical knowledge. FSU's History degree will introduce you to thought­ provoking History courses covering many regions of the world. The History Major at FSU prides itself on both its breadth and depth - yet it will also allow you to focus more on a particular theme or area. In addition to the historical knowledge you will gain, you will learn to research, analyze, and interpret data and to communicate persuasively in both writing and speech. The History Major will allow you to become a confident and informed citizen.

The History Department also participates in the undergraduate programs in Asian, Middle East, Latin American, Caribbean, Russian and East European studies, and the Honors Program.

The College of Arts and Science requires proficiency in a foreign language through the intermediate (2220 or equivalent) level or sign language through the advanced (2614 or equivalent) level.

Requirements for Progression to the Upper-Division Major
To be admitted, students must complete at least 52 hours of credit with an adjusted GPA of 2.00 on FSU coursework with at least half the required hours in General Education completed, including English composition and mathematics. In order to graduate, students must earn a minimum grade of C minus or higher in major and minor coursework, with a minimum GPA of 2.00 within both the major and minor.

Major Program of Studies at FSU: (39 hours*)
39 hours are required (including two World History courses if no European test credit has been earned).

At least 21 of these hours must be earned at FSU.

Students with history test credit (American or European AP, IB, or CLEP) should contact the departmental advisor before taking any of the courses below.

* Students entering FSU prior to Fall 2012 are required to complete 33 credits.

All of the following, or their equivalent (12 hours)
WOH 1023 (3) The Modern World to 1815 (community college equivalent EUH 1000 or WOH 1012)
WOH 1030 (3) The Modern World since 1815 (community college equivalent EUH 1001 or WOH1022)
AMH 2010 (3) A History of the United States to 1865
AMH 2020 (3) A History of the United States since 1865

27 additional hours in upper level history courses distributed as follows:
U. S. History: 6 hours
European History: 6 hours
Latin American or Asian or African or Russian History (in any combination): 6 hours
Two additional 3/4000-level history courses, any topic: 6 hours (Required of students entering Fall 2012 and after)
HIS 4935 (3) Senior Seminar (Topics vary).

Directed Individual Studies, Tutorials, and Honors work may not be counted toward the major. Students must complete a foreign language through the intermediate (2220 or equivalent) level. A minor (or second major) is required.

Minor Coursework: 12 hours in an approved minor area, or 15 hours in an approved interdepartmental minor or requirements as stated by the minor area.

Computer Skills Competency: (3 hours)
CGS 2060 (3), CGS 2100 (3), EME 2040 (3), HIS 4164 (3) or IFS 2116 (3) can be taken to meet this requirement for the major.

Oral Communication Competency: (0-3 hours)
Students must demonstrate the ability to orally transmit ideas and information clearly. This requirement may be met with an approved college-level course.
