Course programme

In your first year, you will be introduced to critical thinking and philosophy. Together with an introduction to English law, you will look at key issues in modern legal philosophy and develop your own approaches to study in a legal environment.

In your second year, you will examine the nature of ethical virtue and principles and judgment in moral philosophy, whilst getting the chance to assess your own moral intuitions and concepts. You will develop a critical appreciation of the connection between experience and knowing the world. A study of ‘Law, Morality and Society’ offers an integrated approach to Philosophy and Law, and you will have the opportunity to investigate immigration and asylum law and theories of punishment.

In your final year, you can choose from a range of topics to suit your interests. These include "freedom, recognition and authenticity", "self and other: the demands of social justice", "philosophy of mind", "terrorism law policy and practice" and "the law of the European Union". You will also have the opportunity to work on an independent research project and carry out a placement within an organisation approved by the University.
