Course programme

The Law programme seeks to promote knowledge, understanding and a critical awareness of a range of major concepts, values, principles and rules of the Scottish legal system.

Students are given the opportunity to study in-depth a variety of specialist branches of law, as well as gaining an understanding of the workings of the Scottish legal system and court structures. You will be encouraged to adopt a contextual approach to the study of law, with special emphasis attached to the relevant social, economic, and political contexts in which law operates.

The programme seeks to offer undergraduates a demanding programme of study. Not only will you gain a thorough knowledge of legal rules and principles, you will also become familiar with the processes of critical thought by acquiring an insight into the problem-based nature of law. Students will be required to develop sophisticated legal research and problem-solving skills in order to analyse questions of law, and questions about law, in a structured way. This systematic approach to legal scholarship will assist students in achieving their academic potential and produce graduates who are thoughtful and persuasive individuals.

Placement Opportunities

Industrial Placement

Students studying Single, Joint or Major/Minor degree combinations have the opportunity between Years 2 and 3 to undertake a year’s industrial placement. This provides practical experience in their subject area and added insight into industry, which will enhance student employability after graduation.

(Optional) Work-Based Learning

Students intending to graduate with a Single subject Honours degree have the opportunity to undertake work-based learning during Year 3. This allows students to apply their academic learning and skills within the workplace and gain credit for appropriate work experience before entering their Honours year. Students also complete two distance learning modules.

Career Prospects

Graduates are likely to find opportunities for employment in a wide range of areas, including citizens advice, trading standards, paralegal work, accountancy, human resources, the civil service, local government, legal publishing, academia, public boards and authorities, the police force, banks, insurance companies, finance companies, manufacturing and trading organisations. While the course does not provide students with a qualification to be a solicitor or advocate, it does provide students with valuable knowledge and skills that may be used to seek further professional legal qualifications.
