About this course

Standard AS/A level entry requirements of five GCSEs at grade A*-C including English and Maths apply.
In addition it would be an advantage to have achieved grade B or above in English. No prior knowledge of law at GCSE is necessary. Plus a minimum APS Score: 45

Aim This course will appeal to any student who is interested in social issues, current affairs, their own rights and the rights and duties of other members of society. The course encourages you to develop your knowledge and understanding of the structure and operation of the legal system.
Content During the course you will:
· Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of legal rules and principles by selecting and explaining relevant information and illustrating with examples and citation
· Analyse legal material, issues and situations, and evaluate and apply the appropriate legal rules and principles
· Present a logical and coherent argument and communicate relevant material in a clear and effective manner using appropriate legal terminology.

Year 1 - AS level
1. Law-making and the legal system
2. Underlying principles of criminal liability and introduction to Tort.

Year 2 - A level
3. Criminal law (fatal and non-fatal offences)
4. Tort (negligence and nuisance) and concepts of law.

Progression/career opportunities
The successful completion of this course will allow students to progress on to a range of Higher Education programmes, including Law. Law provides a good background to many careers, not only the legal profession, but also areas of social work, the police force, the prison service, teaching, consumer affairs, human resource management, trade union work and journalism.

Extra information
You will need a laboratory coat and safety glasses, which you can purchase at cost from the College.

Screening
Students will also be screened (in the College) and must achieve literacy and numeracy at the level appropriate to the course.
