Teaching and Assessment Teaching Expert teaching staff Brunel Law School is research driven and had excellent results in the Research Excellence Framework (REF 2014) Brunel Law School’s lecturers are constantly extending the frontiers of domestic and international legal scholarship through their research. The members of the Criminal Justice teaching team undertake advanced research in a wide range of subjects, such as criminal law, criminal evidence and procedure, criminology, sentencing and punishment, youth justice, criminal law theory, international criminal law and comparative criminal justice, comparative counter-terrorism and human rights. Members of our excellent Criminal Justice Research Centre (CJRC) are engaged in a range of research initiatives including publishing and editing international journals and books, presenting conference papers and involvement in external committees and bodies reviewing criminal justice policies. How will I be taught? Lectures cover general principles and explain difficult concepts and normally last two hours at Level 1 and one hour at Level 3 Handouts giving references, further reading and summaries of points covered, are provided. Some lecturers use very innovative IT tools for presentations and lectures in some modules are audio recorded and made available as podcasts. Seminars are small groups meeting for an hour to discuss practical scenarios and essay questions with a tutor. In addition to their scheduled module specific classes, students are given the opportunity to attend other criminal law or criminal justice related seminars/clinics and Study visits to criminal courts and criminal justice institutions. Personal tutor: At all levels students have a tutor who is available to discuss personal and academic problems. Students who go on placement will also be allocated a work placement tutor who will monitor their progress, visit them in their placement and provide further support if they need it.
