What are the Course Details?
This course provides learners with a good basic level of practical skills and theoretical knowledge about Beauty Therapy.
Is the Course for Me?
This course is for anyone interested in gaining practical and theoretical Beauty Therapy skills.
It is essential that you enjoy meeting people and are able to communicate well. You should also be aware that you must be able to stand for long periods of time while carrying out treatments.
What will I Learn?
To achieve the full qualification, learners must complete the following five units:
- Ensure Your Own Actions Reduce Risks to Health & Safety
- Assist with Salon Reception Duties
- Prepare & Maintain the Beauty Therapy Work Area
- Assist with Facial Treatments
- Assist with Nail Treatments on the Hands
How will I Learn?
Training largely takes place in 'Images', the College's purpose built and well-equipped salon, with specialist equipment and highly trained staff. The course provides a mix of both theoretical and practical training sessions.
The main role of the NVQ Level 1 learners is to assist in the salon and to undertake reception duties.
During salon sessions, theoretical work is covered along with practical demonstrations. Learners train by working on their peers, before progressing to members of the public.
Please note: there is a strict dress code in the salon, and as such learners are required to supply and wear salon whites (approximately £90 (x 2 sets). Learners must also supply a beauty therapy kit (approximately £30, a list will be provided following acceptance to the course), and text books (approximately £6-£28). Applicants can apply for financial assistance for help towards costs.
How will I be Assessed?
As part of the course learners will complete written tests and assignments throughout the year, which will involve much self-directed study. As such, time may be set aside on the timetable for private study. To assist with research and other work, all learners have access to the College's library and IT facilities.
Practical assessments are completed throughout the year. All practical assessments are carried out on members of the public, and in some cases it is the responsibility of the learners to provide suitable clients. Practical assessments are accompanied by oral questions.
Written tests and assignments are a compulsory element of most units.
Time will be allocated to each learner for completing reception duties, including dealing with enquiries, booking appointments and handling payments. Learners may be expected to work in the evening as part of their preparation for working in industry.
Throughout the course learners will also build a portfolio of evidence, which is used to verify completion of relevant tasks. Guidance is given on format but learners are responsible for collecting the actual evidence, which will be monitored regularly.
Progress charts are placed in the salon and learners are encouraged to draw up their own action plans.
What Enrichments are Available?
Learners will have access to various activities within the College to develop and broaden their experience of College life. Learners will also benefit from guest speakers from industry coming into the College.
You will also complete a certificated training course in Natures Way Skincare and retail sales, and study Functional Skills in Application of Number, Communication or ICT.
Are there any Trips or Visits?
If appropriate, learners may attend a visit to one of the various trade shows that are held each year around the UK.
Is there any Work Experience?
As part of the course learners will be required to complete five days work experience within the beauty therapy industry, which is to be arranged by the learner.
What can I Progress to?
On successful completion of the course there is the opportunity to progress onto NVQ Level 2 Beauty Therapy to study specialist treatment techniques (interview required).
Alternatively, learners may progress into employment, working in a salon, or undertaking reception work as an assistant.
Other Learner's Experiences;
A range of success stories are on display in the Images building. Including written comments from past learners.
