Level 1 in Hairdressing

On successful completion, with outstanding commitment and attendance, this programme will enable you to progress onto the VRQ Level 2 Hairdressing programme or apprenticeship programmes and therefore eventually pursue a career in the hairdressing field.

Hairdressing can provide a fascinating and rewarding career if you are practical and creative and enjoy working with people. It is essentially a fashion industry where creativity and artistry combine with technical skills to provide a service for people. It is a demanding occupation that requires good health, stamina, a capacity for hard work, a pleasant personality and the ability to get on with people.

You will need 2 GCSEs at grade 2 (E) or above or, successful completion of the Introduction to Hairdressing programme and have evidence of commitment and good attendance. You will need the motivation to succeed and show personal qualities required for working in the hairdressing industry. A successful interview is essential. Each candidate will be considered on their experience, suitability, school reference showing good attendance and behaviour and a genuine interest in the hairdressing industry.

In addition to the entry qualifications listed, the offer of a place on the course is subject to the outcomes of initial assessment, which will be taken at the College as part of the admissions process. Please note that entry criteria may vary quite significantly between courses at the same level. This is to take account of the specific skills needed for success on particular courses, the length of the course and the requirements for progression to the next level. Entry criteria are given as a guide, and the exact requirements in order to obtain a place on a particular course will be confirmed following attendance at a Welcome Event/Interview.

The programme is delivered using various learning styles, mainly focusing on demonstration with opportunities to practice.

• You will begin by working on each other
• You will experience working on members of the public who will be your clients
• You will work within our modern, well equipped, new salons which provide a realistic commercial setting in which you can gain experience in dealing with clients
• Relevant theory is covered alongside the practical topics
• You will gain work experience in an independent salon

Arrangements are also made for specialist speakers to attend college and professional product training is provided to enable you to experience retailing and customer care first hand.

You will also be entered into the annual college hairstyling and make-up competition held in the Spring term.

Assessment will take place in The Park at the Science Park Campus where the college's new hair salons are based.
You will have the opportunity to use an extensive range of high quality hair products and excellent new specialist equipment.

You will be expected to demonstrate your competence in all units to the standard required in industry.

Assessment takes place throughout the programme by a variety of methods including:
• Practical assessment
• Oral assessment
• Written assessment
• Projects
• Completion of a portfolio
• Completion of a log book

There will be Awarding Body Written Papers set, relating to the essential knowledge.
