Course programme
This package of learning provides training to achieve a level 2 Diploma as well as providing an opportunity to work towards achieving NVQ level 2.
The structure of this course will enable you to learn both practical and theory aspects of carpentry
To achieve the Diploma, you will learn a variety of Carpentry skills as follows:
- Stud walling
- Door frames / linings
- Hanging doors
- All aspects of ironmongery, hinges, latches, locks etc
- Roofing using run/rise method and Pythagoras theorem
- Flooring including joists, trimming for openings and floorboards etc
- Ripping of man-made materials and timber
- Fitting of stairs including cutting over trimmer, fixing etc
In addition, you will learn various aspects of maintenance work including repairs to mouldings, doors and windows, replacing gutters, downpipes and sash cords and throughout, you will also learn how to use power tools correctly as well as setting up and using a circular saw. This particular qualification also covers areas of kitchen fitting including kitchen units, worktops and fitments.
Following this aspect of the package, you will then move on to training for achievement of NVQ. This will provide additional ‘reality’ training and ensure that you are ready for a real working environment and have the opportunity to achieve NVQ level 2. You will be registered with Construction Skills to show that you are working towards NVQ and this will help you generate a CSCS card should you opt to sit a Health and Safety test.
This is a very in depth course and the knowledge and skills that you will gain from this time at Able Skills will put you in a fantastic position when it comes to sourcing carpentry work/employment.
How You’ll LearnYou will be trained over a 9 week period (45 days) and the training in-centre will be predominantly practical.
This course also requires a fair bit of home study commitment from you as there are also theory based assessments to undertake in order to complete this course. You will be provided with resources to help you undertake revision in order to complete these assessments.
The Carpentry Diploma qualification is broken down in to specific units and the assessments vary according to the unit you are undertaking, however you can expect to have practical assessments, online exams and written exams across the following:
- Health, safety and welfare in construction
- Principles of building construction, information and communication
- Carry out first fix flooring and roofing
- Carry out first fix frames, partitions and stairs
- Carry out second fixing operations
- Carry out carpentry maintenance
- Set up and operate a circular saw
We will provide guidance on sources of reference that we recommend that you use in order to gain as much additional information as you can which will only serve to heighten your understanding of the carpentry units that you will be completing on the course with us.
Courses Open To You AfterCity and Guilds have also introduced a level 2 Bench Joinery qualification which will be a natural choice for you or alternatively, level 3 Carpentry is also available at Able Skills.
Additional InfoYou will be provided with access to all of the facilities within our double sized carpentry workshop and you will have access to 3 instructors who will provide you with practical sessions to help you move comfortably through the qualification and the NVQ training; in addition, we will provide you with the relevant reference material to support the course which will help you no end. Following completion of the 9 weeks you will also be presented with an NVQ portfolio which is yours to add evidence to as and when you have access to work. This evidence and later arranged site visits will contribute to you achieving NVQ level 2.
NVQs are ‘Declarations of Competence’ and as such, cannot be achieved in a simulated environment like a training centre – all we can do here is prepare you for the process and we do this very well. By registering you for NVQ, you can also gain access to a CSCS Experienced Worker or Trainee card (if you arrange independently to sit a CSCS test) – this will further enhance your access to work.
Duration & CostThis is a 9 Week (45 day) course and the cost is £3995.00 including vat. A deposit of £500.00 will secure a booking with the balance payable over the period of the training. Any NVQ work based visits will incur additional fees.
