This qualification is an introduction to the primary aspects of working with children and young people between the ages of 4 to 16 in play environments. It provides an understanding of the importance of play and playwork in children and young people’s lives.

The Diploma covers the knowledge and skills needed when working under supervision and requires the learner to demonstrate the full application of these in the workplace, and is aimed at all those who wish to work in a supervised role in a wide range of playwork environments. Learners will need to be working or on practical placement as they need to show both knowledge and skills. Perhaps you would like to work with children or young people in a less structured or formal setting than a school or nursery. You might like the idea of working in after school or holiday clubs, adventure playgrounds or youth groups that encourage children and young people to challenge themselves through play - enabling them to learn about risk in a safe yet stimulating environment. Playworkers can work in a wide range of environments including: After School Clubs, Adventure, Playgrounds, Soft Play Areas, Family Centres and Holiday Clubs.

You will require 4 GCSEs at A*- D, which must include Maths and English/Welsh, or completion of a full relevant vocational programme at Level 1 which must include GCSE Maths and English/Welsh at grades A*-D or equivalent such as Level 1 ESW Communications and Application of Number. Plus satisfactory references.

You must have satisfactory clearance with the Disclosure and Barring Service. You will be invited to attend an interview and you will undertake an assessment in literacy and numeracy to establish any support required. Applicants with appropriate experience, who do not necessarily meet the academic qualifications, may be considered.
