Course programme

Course overview
A fixed timetable of study will be allocated in the first week as part of the course induction, this will show start and finish times of each lesson, units to study, the allocated room and the lecturing staff. There is a roughly equal split between theory and practical study and achievement is by both examination and practical assessments. The course runs on a Monday on a part time day basis, i.e. one day per week over the college year, for 2 years, September to June. An option to complete one year only is available for those wishing to complete the Certificate, the Diploma being the second year of study. You will be required to achieve 57 credits for the Diploma and 29 credits for the Certificate, the qualifications include the following eight units:Science and Calculations for Fabrication and Welding practiceMaterials for Fabrication and Welding practiceFabrication processes – plate or sheet metalAdvanced fabrication processes – plate or sheet metalWelding Inspection and Quality assuranceMetal Arc Gas shielded welding – vertical and overhead positionsManual metal arc welding – vertical and overhead positionsTungsten arc gas shielded welding - vertical and overhead positions
Who is this course for?
This course is aimed at students who wish to become technically qualified as part of an Advanced Engineering Apprenticeship in Fabrication and Welding and those wishing to become technically qualified at level 3. You should be currently employed in the Fabrication and Welding industry and seeking to improve your career prospects. Entry level is based upon progression from level 2, however consideration will be given to those with industrial experience and have good Maths and Science skills. Mature learners will be considered based on fabrication and welding experiences, again a good level of Science and Maths is required.
