AS/AGCE POLITICS

Politics is all around us and affects the way we live our daily lives and society as a whole. Studying Politics at Ashton Sixth Form College will give you a real insight into how the political system works in the UK. You will acquire an understanding of how political decisions are made and who has the power and authority to make those decisions.

What qualifications do I need to study on the course?
You'll need at least 5 grades C at GCSE or equivalent.

What will I study?

In the AS year you'll focus on issues such as the mechanics of government including the European Union, Parliament and the role of the Prime Minister, local government and the civil service.
In your second year you will focus on US political systems and political ideologies including fascism and socialism. There will also be a visit to the Houses of Parliament where past students have seen the likes of Boris Johnson, William Hague and Ken Livingstone.

Method of assessment
100% exam

What will I be able to progress to?
You can apply for degree courses in Humanities, Arts or Social Sciences and in particular study of Politics, History and Law. Politics can lead to a number of career choices including journalism, local government, law and teaching.
