Course programme

Classical Civilisation
AS/A2 Level - Two-year course
This course will appeal to students who appreciate literature, drama and the visual arts, and who will enjoy learning about the works of antiquity. War, family relationships, marriage, infidelity, guilt and revenge are the key themes, all of which are explored within the larger framework of the great questions; the power of individuals to govern their own fate, the role of the gods in human life.

In year one (AS), the course material will include Greek epic poetry by Homer (The Odyssey) and Ancient Greek Drama (Tragedies by Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides).

In year two (A2), course material includes Roman epic poetry by Virgil (The Aeneid) and The Iliad by Homer. Students will also gain an appreciation of the Classical Greek World through a study of its sculptures, vase painting and architecture.

Students attend performances of Greek Tragedies wherever possible, and benefit from lecture days in London delivered by leading classical scholars.

Careers and Further Studies
This course is a very good general qualification for Higher Education, and is especially valuable for students wishing to specialise in English, Philosophy, Law, History or Classical Civilisation itself at degree level. It is useful for most jobs in administration, and in particular publishing, teaching, journalism, or indeed any job in which an ability to communicate fluently and concisely is required.

General Entry Requirements
Students will need the following:
1. An average GCSE points score of 4.7 calculated from your eight best GCSEs or equivalent vocational qualifications but must include GCSE Maths and English Language.
2. At least five GCSEs at grade C or above which must include GCSE English Language.
