Economics
AS/A2 Level - Two-year course
Economics provides a valuable insight into the ways in which consumers, producers and the Government interact. This course includes particular emphasis on the behaviour of markets and the determination of prices, wages, interest rates and exchange rates. Recurring issues in political life such as unemployment, inflation and the environment also form important parts of the syllabus.

In year one (AS), study includes competitive markets and how they work, as well as the national and international economy.

In year two (A2), study includes the economics of transport and Macro economics in a global perspective.

Although economics is a theory-based subject, there is a strong emphasis on practical applications and problem-solving. Assessments are comprehension exercises based on case studies or newspaper articles and statistics, consequently requiring both numeracy and writing skills.

Students learn the tools and techniques of economics, enabling them to explain and analyse many aspects of current affairs, Government†s economic policies and personal finance.

Careers and Further Studies
Economics continues to be a highly popular subject at degree level, offering a route into the financial sector and business management. It is of particular value to careers such as accountancy, insurance, financial services and banking where it is an element of the professional examinations.

General Entry Requirements
Students will need the following:
1. An average GCSE points score of 4.7 calculated from your eight best GCSEs or equivalent vocational qualifications but must include GCSE Maths and English Language.
2. At least five GCSEs at grade C or above which must include GCSE English Language.
