English Language
AS/A2 Level - Two-year course
This course is designed to build upon the English Language skills developed at GCSE Level. The aim of the course is to develop students†knowledge of the uses of English.

Students will be introduced to new areas of study relating to the theory and practice of language. This will provide them with an understanding of the nature and functions of language.

Throughout the course students will analyse a wide range of texts and study a number of topics, including Language and Gender, Language and Power, Language Change, Child Language Development and Language and Technology.

They will also have the opportunity to develop their own writing skills, learning how to write for a wide range of audiences and purposes.

In year one (AS), two units form the foundation for language study which will be developed in year two (A2). As part of their coursework, students will produce a folder of original writing at AS Level and will undertake a small research project in an area of language use in the second year of the course.

Careers and Further Studies
This course is useful for a wide range of career options including administration, publishing, journalism and teaching. Many students choose to study a degree in English, English Language or Linguistics. Some students progress to courses in Creative Writing, Media Studies, Journalism or Teaching English as a Foreign Language.

General Entry Requirements
Students will need the following:
  • An average GCSE points score of 4.7 calculated from your eight best GCSEs or equivalent vocational qualifications but must include GCSE Maths and English Language.
  • At least five GCSEs at grade C or above which must include GCSE English Language.
