Course programme

Geography
AS/A2 Level - Two-year course
Geography investigates the inter-relationships between people and the varied environments found across the Earth's surface.

In the first year (AS), we consider the challenges posed by headline global issues, such as natural hazards, climatic change, population migration and globalisation. We also look at coastal management, extreme weather, how locations are being rebranded and the contrasts in quality of life between urban and rural areas.

In the second year (A2), the use, management and threats to vital resources such as energy, water and biodiversity are examined. Students will also choose a particular topic to research such as the problem of food supply, health and pollution, leisure and tourism or tectonic hazards.

Where possible, fieldwork will be used to supplement work done in the College and students will develop their skills in the collection, analysis and evaluation of data gathered by themselves in the field.

Careers and Further Studies
Geography provides a respected qualification for both Higher Education and a range of careers. Higher Education courses in Geography, Earth Sciences, Geology, Environmental Sciences and many related subjects are all open to A Level Geography students. Career possibilities include planning, surveying, land-use and environmental management.

General Entry Requirements
Students will need the following:
1. An average GCSE points score of 4.7 calculated from your eight best GCSEs or equivalent vocational qualifications but must
include GCSE Maths and English Language.
2. At least five GCSEs at grade C or above which must include GCSE English Language.
