History
AS/A2 Level - Two-year course
This course will provide students interested in the past with the ideal opportunity to develop their existing interests and to explore some of the most exciting aspects of late modern history.

In year one (AS), we will look at some of the key events, ideas, attitudes and beliefs that shaped the two superpowers of the twentieth century. After a study of the events and aftermath of the 1917 Russian revolutions, we will look at the US civil rights movements of the 1950s and 60s. The course will continue with an analysis of the impact of war on Britain between 1854 and 1929.

In year two (A2), coursework is done on the stormy one hundred years of Anglo/Irish relations up to the conflict surrounding the creation of the Irish Free State in 1921. Did the British leave Ireland in 1921 as a result of violence or after reasoned argument and negotiation, or a combination of the two? The course is completed by a study of German history from the Kaiser (1900) to the Fuhrer (1945). To what extent was Germany responsible for the outbreak of the First World War? How popular and efficient was the Nazi regime in the years 1933-39?
