Entry Requirement: Successful Completion of Subsidiary Diploma (Merit Grade)

Applicants for all courses in Animal Studies are expected to show a strong commitment to the industry and a strong personal statement.

Relevant work experience in the Animal Care industry (a minimum of two weeks in duration) must have been completed with a satisfactory reference in support of that work prior to the start of the course.

List of Units:

· Understand the Principles of Animal Biology

· Undertake and Review Work Related Experience in the Animal Management Sector (0.5 of a module)

· Undertake Kennel and Cattery Management

· Undertake an Investigative Project in the Animal Management Sector

· Understand Animal Anatomy and Physiology

· Understand and Undertake Wildlife Management and Rehabilitation

· Understand the Principles of Animal Nutrition

· Understand the Principles and Carry Out the Practice of Exotic Animal Health and Husbandry

· Understand the Principles of Zoological Animal Health and Husbandry

· Understand the Principles of Wildlife Populations, Ecology and Conservation

*This list is an example of what may be taught, but can vary at each Centre.

Assessments:

Assessments will include assignments, presentations and reports. There are no formal examinations on the Level 3 Diploma.

Industrial / Work Experience

Students must attend a relevant placement in the animal industry, for example, veterinary practice, boarding kennel, pet retail organisation or canine grooming parlour.

For second year students the work placement if required, usually takes place each Friday.

Possible Careers / Jobs:

Employment opportunities in Animal Management and its related industries are currently very good. The Subsidiary, Diploma and Extended Diploma Animal Management provides the qualification and experience for entry into the industry at an operational level with future prospects for management. Students who successfully complete the course may wish to take up employment in one of the following industries:

· Pedigree breeder

· Pet shop

· Animal Rescue

· Quarantine establishment

· Animal Trainer

· Zoo

· Animal beautician

· Kennel / cattery

· Trade supplier

· Animal collection

· Animal welfare officer

Progression:

As a course equivalent to A Level the Level 3 Diploma is an ideal spring board for progression depending on UCAS points gained. Students may wish to continue their studies in Higher Education, eg:

· BSc (Hons) Animal Behaviour & Welfare

· FdSc Welfare of Animals (Management or Animal Collections, Wildlife Conservation, Health Care Management)
