This course is designed to give you a thorough introduction into Creative Media and the broad range of pathways it embraces. The course will give learners a solid introduction to a range of different specialist areas, including the development of theoretical and technical skills in the following areas: moving image, film production, digital multimedia design e.g. print-based journalism and web design. Learners will develop broadcast journalism skills, focusing on the production of news and music-based programming, and audio documentaries, before choosing a specialist area to study for the end-of-year Final Major Project (FMP).

Year One
Through a mixture of practical lessons and vocational projects, learners will have the opportunity to develop their creative filmmaking skills and broadcast journalism skills. They will be taught using professional standard equipment, including cameras such as the Canon XHA1S HD and Mac editing suites running Adobe Creative Suite software. Journalistic skills will be developed through radio programming, audio documentaries, and multimedia projects - using audio, visual and interactive media skills. Film making skills will be developed through documentary production and creative camera workshops. Students will be taught using professional standard equipment and editing software such as the Adobe Suite, which includes Audition, Premier Pro, Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign. We have a fully functioning radio studio, which is regularly used to broadcast a variety of programming. Students will be expected to produce and present a regular radio programme, and to develop, produce and edit factual programming and Music video content.

Course programme

This qualification helps you to progress on to:
• BA/BSc/FdA at a Higher Education institution
• Apprenticeships within the wider commercial/ creative based industries and supported through Cambridge Regional College
• Employment e.g. production assistant, runner, junior researcher, broadcast assistant, broadcast journalist

• You should be at least 16 years of age
• A minimum of 4 GCSEs at grade C/4 or above, or a UAL L2 Diploma in Creative Media Production & Technology, or Level 2 BTEC Extended Certificate or equivalent
• GCSE English language grade C/4 or above is essential and GCSE Maths grade C/4 or above is highly desirable
• Attendance at a Welcome Event, and at taster days
• A reference is required

In addition to the entry qualifications listed, the offer of a place on the course is subject to the outcomes of initial assessment, which will be taken at the College as part of the admissions process. Please note that entry criteria may vary quite significantly between courses at the same level. This is to take account of the specific skills needed for success on particular courses, the length of the course and the requirements for progression to the next level. Entry criteria are given as a guide, and the exact requirements in order to obtain a place on a particular course will be confirmed following attendance at a Welcome Event/Interview.

All teaching and assessment are based around practical, industry-related projects. Wherever possible, projects are in response to real industry-related clients: course work is continually assessed by a range of methods, which may include projects, assignments, case studies, course work, self-assessment, feedback from clients and panel reviews.

Final Major project grades range from Pass, Merit or Distinction, awarded to the final outcome of the course work submission and will determine the number of UCAS points received as shown below.

The Study Programmes are over 5 days each week. 3 days at college and 2 days home study.
