This one year programme aims to enable you to diagnose problems in a range of vehicle systems, covering Engine, Transmission, Electrical and Chassis Systems. It consists of four units and follows the Institute of the Motor Industry Level 3 Technical Diploma. In addition you will also gain a Level 1 Welding Award. During the course you will learn and demonstrate practical skills and knowledge relating to vehicle maintenance, service and complex diagnosis. You will also be given the opportunity to undertake work experience both within the college and externally.

This course is a learning programme which involves students studying both the theory and practical aspects of the following:

• Correctly carrying out vehicle inspection routines
• Developing own diagnostic skills with regards to powertrain, chassis and transmission systems.
• Complex Electrical fault finding within various vehicle systems.
• Understanding and use of up to date diagnostic equipment.

Health and safety is of paramount importance in all areas of the automotive industry, and this will be reinforced throughout the course.
To aid in the learner's development they will be allowed to gain valuable work experience in our own commercial area working in a real working environment.
Whilst at the college you will be encouraged to take part in competitions, participate in the college enrichment programmes, mentoring other students and develop your entrepreneurial skills through charitable and community projects which run throughout the year and are led by students.

Course programme

Successful completion of all elements of this study programme will allow you to progress in several different ways, including;

• Gaining employment within the automotive industry and undertaking an apprenticeship scheme to gain further qualifications and experience.
• Your knowledge and skills would be useful in gaining employment in the automotive industry in a number of roles such as parts, sales or service reception.

To access this course you will be required to have successful completed an IMI Level 2 Diploma in Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair and a L2 Functional Skills in Numeracy and Literacy, or have equivalent industry experience.

In addition to the entry qualifications listed, the offer of a place on the course is subject to the outcomes of initial assessment, which will be taken at the College as part of the admissions process. Please note that entry criteria may vary quite significantly between courses at the same level. This is to take account of the specific skills needed for success on particular courses, the length of the course and the requirements for progression to the next level. Entry criteria are given as a guide, and the exact requirements in order to obtain a place on a particular course will be confirmed following attendance at a Welcome Event/Interview.

Learning takes place through a variety of theory and practical lessons. Students will also need to carry out personal research to enable them to successfully complete the course, guidance on this will be given by the course tutors.

Your skills and knowledge will be continually assessed throughout the course through formal multiple choice examinations, and practical tests.

Support will be provided through regular meetings with your course tutor.
