About this course
You will need 4 GCSEs at Grade C or above, or an appropriate NVQ Level 2, BTEC First Diploma or Intermediate GNVQ with a satisfactory grade. Mature students are welcome to apply without formal qualifications but acceptance is subject to a satisfactory interview.

Who is this course for? Those who are interested in the outdoors, active leisure, adventure or outdoor pursuits. Those who want to develop the skills, knowledge and understanding of the outdoor industry and who want to learn more about outdoor adventure in the UK and abroad. Those who wish to use their knowledge and skills to educate others and to provide a more sustainable future and minimise the impact of outdoor pursuits, both in the UK and abroad.
Previous knowledge required: You will need 4 GCSEs at Grade C or above, or an appropriate NVQ Level 2, BTEC First Diploma or Intermediate GNVQ with a satisfactory grade. Mature students are welcome to apply without formal qualifications but acceptance is subject to a satisfactory interview.
What will I study? The Body in Action, Health and Safety in Sport, Training and Fitness for Sport, Leadership in Sport, Principles and Practices in Outdoor Adventure, Equipment and Facilities for Outdoor and Adventurous Activities are all core units for the National Certificate in Sport (Outdoor Adventure). These will be studied along with six other specialist units. Additional qualifications are likely to include a First Aid at Work Certificate, Basic Expedition Leaders Award and key skills.
What else will I do? GCSE in Maths and/or English if necessary. Sport and recreation activities take place on Wednesday afternoons. You may also join in activities arranged by the student association including trips and guest speakers.
How will I be assessed? Learners will be assesssed through a variety of assessment methods that include assignments, case studies, log books, practical skill observations, witness testimonies, oral questioning, written questioning, verbal presentations and project work.
What will I achieve? National Certificate in Sport (Outdoor Adventure). Key Skills at Level 2 or 3 and additional relevant qualifications. The National Certificate is equivalent to 2 A Levels and is studied over one academic year.
What can I do afterwards? A National Certificate in Sport (Outdoor Adventure) provides a sound basis to progress onto degree programmes involving Outdoor Education. The qualification also offers opportunities to enter employment in the Outdoor Education Sector.
