Do you teach learners with disabilities? Would you like to explore strategies for effectively teaching learners with disabilities and take the opportunity to consider theories and current policy? Would you like a recognised qualification that evidences your specialist role in teaching? This Level 5 programme enables you to achieve a specialist qualification in teaching learners with disabilities.
This course is delivered at Derby College and is awarded by City & Guilds. It has been developed for teachers who hold a generic teaching qualification or untrained teachers who have significant experience of teaching.
You will study three modules at Level 5. These are designed to facilitate you to critically evaluate the policy framework of SEND, both nationally and locally, and to explore your own professional practice.

Course Content: Understanding Theories and Frameworks for Teaching Learners with Disabilities (15 credits) Inclusive Teaching and Learning for Learners with Disabilities (15 credits) Action Learning for Teaching in a Specialist Area of Disability (15 credits) How will I be assessed? You will be assessed through coursework and teaching practice, which includes group and individual presentations, an action research project, reflective writing and assignment tasks, a portfolio of professional practice and four graded observations of your practice, followed by reflection and self-evaluation. Are there any additional costs or specialist equipment required? You just need stationery. What can I do after this course? On gaining this Diploma, you can pursue or continue developing a teaching career in the Education and Skills sector, specialising in working with learners with disabilities. Additionally, you could progress to a BA (Hons) Education Studies, a Foundation Degree (SEND) or a Masters in Education (dependent on your current qualifications).
