Course programme

Course Content: Unknown language – you will learn the basics of a language you have never encountered before, and use this experience as a means of reflecting on the learning and teaching process in language learning and development. Teaching practice (including journal) – you will deliver sessions to ESOL learners for at least six hours (a placement can be provided for you). These teaching hours will be outside of course hours, and you must be able to commit to this. You will be observed and assessed on this teaching practice. Materials assignment – you are required to evaluate one set of teaching materials that you have used in the classroom, say how effective it was, and recommend improvements and adaptations for other groups. Learner profile – you will investigate the background and learning needs of one particular learner, with a view to delivering a lesson that addresses some of these needs. You will write an outline scheme of work for further teaching which addresses the learner’s needs. Grammar and phonology (the study of sounds in a language). How will I be assessed? You will be assessed through a range of written tasks, one exam, observations of practice, presentations and an in-depth learner profile. There will be final language awareness examinations in grammar and the sound system of English (phonology). Are there any additional costs or specialist equipment required? You need stationery only. What can I do after this course? Successful completion of this course can help you launch a career teaching English all over the world. It provides an internationally recognised qualification for this purpose. Achieving TESOL may also support you in obtaining ESOL teaching in this country and you could gain further ESOL and teacher training qualifications to achieve full status to teach in the UK.
