Course information:
AS Level in Classical Civilisation

Course summary:
This one-year course leads to an AS level, which is a qualification in its own right. It can be used as the first half (50%) of an A level qualification.

Course content:
The course aims to develop both an interest in and enjoyment of Classical literature. Students are encouraged and expected to read widely, critically and independently, and to form their own opinions about a variety of texts. While focused primarily on the literature and literary forms of the Classical period, the course is essentially interdisciplinary and students will also learn about other features of Greek society and culture, including philosophy, history, archaeology and religion / mythology.
The set texts include Homer†s Odyssey and four Greek tragedies.

Course structure:
Classical Civilisation combines with all other arts and humanities subjects.

Assessment procedure:
The AS GCE comprises two units, each of which is examined and externally assessed, forming 50% of the four-unit Advanced GCE.

Unit CC2: Homer†s Odyssey and Society
(50% of AS level; 25% of A level); 1.5 hour examination paper.
This unit introduces candidates to the study of Classical literature through the detailed study of Homer†s epic poem (which is studied in the form of a prose translation). The examination is composed of two sections and candidates answer one question from each section.

Unit CC4: Greek Tragedy in its Context
(50% of AS level; 25% of A level); 1.5 hour examination paper.
