Method of assessment
There are two exams at AS, and no coursework. If you go on to do A2 then you will be required to do a piece of coursework.

Why choose this course?
It allows you to look at those familiar areas you have enjoyed at GCSE in more depth and in a more analytical way. There will also be new topics so that you can broaden your knowledge of the subject. There is a friendly atmosphere in the classes and the fieldwork and residential trips are both useful and fun. You will meet like-minded people from a variety of course areas, as Geography combines well with most other subjects. It can add science to an arts based programme of study and it can also improve essay writing and evaluative skills for students studying the sciences, so it gives breadth to your choices. It is also a subject that is increasingly relevant and it will help you understand some of the global issues we face.

What will I study?
The course will cover human and physical Geography and there will be four topics in the first year and three in the second year, which will cover various aspects of the natural and human environment. The topics are: rivers, coasts, population change and energy issues in the first year and development and globalisation, plate tectonics and hazards and weather and climate in the second year. Within your study of Geography you will also sharpen your geographical skills such as map reading, interpreting graphs, planning fieldwork etc.

Huish Extra
The course features day trips in the local area to practise field skills and to make the topics you learn about in the classroom more real. In your second year you will have the opportunity to go on a residential trip, probably either to Iceland or Sicily.
