About this course
A previous study of Mathematics at GCSE level, leading to an award of grade B or above is required. Study of the higher level GCSE syllabus is essential.

AS Level in Mathematics
Course summary:
This one-year course leads to an AS level, which is a qualification in its own right. It can also be used as the first half (50%) of an A level qualification.
Course content:
In the first year students will study 2 Core Mathematics modules (C1&C2) together with a module in Decision Mathematics (D1).
Core Mathematics
Modules C1 and C2 cover:
Algebra: quadratics, indices, surds, simultaneous equations, inequalities, division, factors.
Co-ordinate Geometry: straight lines, quadratics, cubics, transformations of graphs, the circle.
Trigonometry: sine and cosine rules, angles greater than 90°, identities, solution of equations.
Sequences and Series: arithmetic, geometric and binomial series. Logarithms and exponentials: graphs and equations
Differentiation: gradients, tangents.
Integration: areas, trapezium rule.
Decision Mathematics
Module D1 covers: Algorithms, Critical Path Analysis, Linear Programming, Matchings.
Course structure:
The course builds upon GCSE knowledge and understanding to provide a broad base of higher level expertise in Mathematics from which students can select pathways to the full GCE â€-A†level. Practical applications of Mathematics combined with sound techniques make the study of this subject applicable to a wide range of eventual career choices.
Assessment procedure:
Each module is assessed by a 1½ hour examination. There is no coursework.

GCE AS Level Mathematics, awarded by Edexcel
Progression opportunities:
On successful completion of the AS level course, students can progress on to the A2 level.
