An opportunity to combine an understanding of the mass media in society and methods for analyzing media texts (e.g. television programmes, films, advertising and the press) with the development of practical skills for media production in print and video. The balance of theory and practical work means that you will learn how the media industries operate, research and investigate issues and debates about the role of the media in society, analyse texts from a variety of media, and create productions of your own. At AS Level, students will study media texts TV, Advertising, Film, Games and the Internet the institutions that create them and the audiences that interact with them.
You will deconstruct texts, analyzing their Forms, Audiences and Representation. You will also produce media products that demonstrate an implicit understanding of the ideas we have covered. In A2 candidates will build on their AS studies to broaden that knowledge of Text and Industry in three different media areas and create a practical Media Production as part of a portfolio.
Qualification explained
A-Level courses are divided into two parts. In the first year you will study two units of a subject leading to an AS (Advanced Subsidiary) qualification. In the second year, you can take a further two units at A2 in the same subject to gain a full A Level. (In some subjects, the courses are divided into 3 rather than 2 units at AS and A2.)
