Lift Truck Instructor / Examiner

Overview

Delegates will be updated on relevant statutory requirements following Road Transport Industry Training Board (RTITB) and Health & Safety Executive (HSE) recommendations and provided with refresher training and instruction prior to RTITB assessment.

Employers will appreciate that candidates for Instructor or Examiner positions need to be carefully chosen. Perhaps the two most important qualities are operating skill and enthusiasm for the task.

In addition, candidates should be aware that instructing is a demanding job. A pleasant personality, good communication skills, natural leadership and a flexible approach are essential for success.

For this course, delegates must hold an operator's certificate obtained in the 12 months prior to commencement.

Course agenda

Week 1 - Job safety knowledge and practical operating skills:

  • Health & Safety at Work Act 1974
  • Engineering principles/rated capacities/stability
  • Operating safety code
  • Pre-shift checks, battery charging and re-fuelling
  • Introduction to the machine and controls
  • Correct steering procedures (laden/unladen)
  • Correct stacking and de-stacking procedures
  • Battery care and simple maintenance
  • Test - Theory & practical

Week 2 - Instructional techniques and methods:

  • Selection and basic training of fork lift truck operators
  • HSE - Safety in the use of lift trucks
  • HSE - Code of Practice
  • The role of the instructor
  • Learning (incentives and methods)
  • Principles of instruction
  • Lesson types and structure
  • Presentation and lessons/plans
  • Demonstrations and practical periods
  • Safety and the role of the instructor
  • Final practical and theoretical assessments by the RTITB

Certification

Upon successful completion of the course, candidates will be issued with a RTITB-approved certificate.
