Lifting Equipment Practical Inspection & Record Keeping

Overview

This course is designed to provide a practical enhancement to the Safe Slinging & Lifting Appreciation course for people responsible for the more detailed periodic inspections of lifting equipment.

Delegates will learn to set up a recording system for equipment and carry out periodicinspections throughout the life of a number of items of equipment. This will be assessed by the trainer and the trainees will retain this as an example for their records.

The course will also demonstrate the strengths and weaknesses of certain materials by way of destruction tests.

If you are an employer or self-employed person providing lifting equipment for use at work, or if you have control of the use of lifting equipment, you must make sure the lifting equipment is safe.

The main requirements for you as a ‘duty holder' are in the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER) and the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER).

Course agenda

In addition to the theory elements of the Safe Slinging & Lifting Appreciation course, the following topics will be emphasised:

  • The importance of traceability for all lifting equipment
  • Completing inspection records
  • Inspecting equipment and recording the findings
  • Monitoring the degradation of items of equipment and assessing the point at which to withdraw items from service
  • Processes for quarantining equipment
  • Processes for investigating the effects of contaminants and the details required for returning to service
  • In addition to the practical elements of the Safe Slinging & Lifting
  • Appreciation course, destruction testing of round slings and web slings will also be covered. Where required, additional topics specific to the delegates can also be covered.

Certification

Successful completion of the course will result in the issue of a certificate of attendance.
