Linguistics and its Applications for a Multilingual Society (master's two years)

Programme structure

You take 60 ECTS from the University of Oslo and 65 ECTS from the Catholic University of Louvain each university, and you may choose if you want to do your first year in Oslo or in Louvain.

General structure

This programme consist of 125 ECTS, which includes
General courses (up to 30 ects)

• Specialisation courses (at least 10 ECTS)
• Internship (10 ects)
• Master's thesis (30 ects)
• Note that the mobility between the universities is obligatory for the double degree; to obtain a double degree diploma you must have at least 60 ECTS from each university.

Students will receive thesis supervision at the university where they are based in their fourth and final semester (with co-tuition by a supervisor at the other university). The thesis must be 40-60 standard pages and is to be submitted by June 1 in the fourth semester in Oslo (other deadlines apply for those doing their second year in Louvain).

You spend two terms at the University of Oslo and take 60 credits in English, French or German linguistics. In your first term you take the obligatory course ENG4111 – Corpora in English Language Research and choose from both the general courses and from the specialisation courses. In your second term you take the obligatory course ENG4910 – Internship for Linguistics and its Application for a Multilingual Society, and you choose courses from the list below. You need to choose at least one course (10 credits) from the list of specialisation courses.

As a LAMUSO student you will be required to hand in a thesis proposal for your master’s thesis (If you take ENG4112 – Methods in English Language Research - it is part of the course work). A template for the thesis proposal and information about the deadline for submission can be found on the programme website. You will also be contacted by the teacher assessing the thesis proposals at the beginning of your second semester.

You choose your thesis topic within one of three specialisations. You need at least one course (10 credits) within this specialisation.

The second year is spent in Louvain-la-Neuve where you take more courses. Note that courses in Louvain normally carry 5 credits each, which means you will be takling more than three courses in one term. In the fourth semester you complete your master’s thesis
