This degree in Linguistics with Chinese combines the study of various aspects of language, such as sound, grammar and meaning, with the study of Chinese language and culture.

You will begin your first year with our core Linguistics module where you will be introduced to topics across the full breadth of the linguistics discipline including phonetics, phonology, morphology and syntax. You will also study our core Chinese module which is designed for beginners with little or no prior knowledge of Chinese Language or culture. For your final first year module you can choose to complement your studies with an English Language module or from a wide range of options from across the University.

For your second year you will take Structures of the Worlds Languages and Sounds of the Worlds Languages alongside further Chinese Language modules. These modules will build on the intensive language introduction given in your first year through further language tuition and understanding of the structure of Chinese. You will also have the opportunity to choose a further module from those offered by the Department, such Discourse Analysis: Looking at Language in Use or The Language of Advertising.

You will have the opportunity to spend Year 3 on placement with a public, private or voluntary organisation in the UK or overseas. This experience will boost your employment prospects and will help you to decide on your career direction and the kind of organisation in which you want to work once you graduate. You will be doing a real, responsible job – with all the satisfaction that brings. Our Placements Team will support you in finding and applying for a suitable placement that will support your professional development. Applying for a placement is a competitive process and the preparatory modules you will complete in years one and two are designed to give you the best chance of success in your placement applications.

About this course

A combined degree that includes a language is highly sought after by employers. The benefit of a degree in Linguistics or English Language with Chinese is the wide choice of careers available to graduates, ranging from accountancy and IT to journalism, advertising and management. It is also valuable in fields where international communication is important, like science, trade and international relations.

The language and communication skills gained on this course along with a proficiency in Chinese language and a practical knowledge of China can lead to career destinations in the Civil Service, international trade and banking that operate in or with China.

Many of our graduates continue their studies at Lancaster or other institutions and undertake postgraduate studies or professional training in the field of languages or linguistics.

A Level AAB

Required Subjects A level Chinese, or if this is to be studied from beginners’ level, AS grade B or A level grade B in another foreign language, or GCSE grade A or 7 in a foreign language. Native Mandarin speakers will not be accepted onto this scheme.

IELTS 6.5 overall with at least 5.5 in each component.

Lancaster University offers a range of programmes, some of which follow a structured study programme, and others which offer the chance for you to devise a more flexible programme. We divide academic study into two sections - Part 1 (Year 1) and Part 2 (Year 2, 3 and sometimes 4). For most programmes Part 1 requires you to study 120 credits spread over at least three modules which, depending upon your programme, will be drawn from one, two or three different academic subjects. A higher degree of specialisation then develops in subsequent years.
