The course offers you a broad range of topics in English, including gender, race theory and postcolonial literature and theory, medieval literature, Shakespeare, the gothic, the American Suburban novel, Iris Murdoch, slavery and empire. It also offers you the chance to engage in continental philosophy with an emphasis on deconstruction, French thought, German idealism, critical theory, aesthetics, contemporary feminist, modern continental thought and psychoanalysis. The core module offers you the chance to examine the boundary between English and philosophy, focusing on their divergent assumptions as well as their connections. It pushes you to think about what is unique to each discipline, and how each discipline can complement the other.

About this course
capitalises on Kingston's exceptional and diverse strengths in the fields of literature and philosophy;
engages with the question of interdisciplinarity itself, allowing you to formulate a well-informed understanding of interdisciplinarity, as well as providing you with a strong basis from which to pursue further postgraduate study in this field, philosophy or literature;
offers an inclusive and non-partisan perspective on issues addressed in the course, drawing on the distinct strands of philosophy;
champions a balanced approach, in which equal importance is given to literary and philosophical component.
Graduates from this course will work in a range of spheres in which critical thinking and analytical writing is required, including the creative industries, public sector institutions, teaching, creative industries, advertising, communication industries. Other students will go on to further research. A PhD degree is offered in English and philosophy.
The minimum entry qualifications for the programme are:
BA or BSc: In normal circumstances, at least a 2:1 or upper second class honours degree will be required.
Exceptionally, an equivalent will be considered on an individual basis-for example relevant experience in the workforce, supplemented by a written sample analysing and justifying why the candidate should be accepted.
