London Copenhagen: Contemporary Digital Print for Fashion

Outcomes:

• During this course you will learn research techniques employed by students of the two leading colleges delivering the course (Central Saint Martins in London and KADK in Copenhagen) to create a wealth of visual material for your projects.
• You will produce 6 printouts or fabric samples of your designs which you will then incorporate into a line of 6 outfit designs, three of which will have placement prints engineered to fit your shape.
• Develop research skills to produce design solutions which make an imaginative use of colour and imagery.
• Have the ability to communicate ideas using drawing and other visual forms appropriate to the Fashion Print field.
• You will also leave with three final illustrations for your portfolio.

London

This course focuses on contemporary digital print in British fashion. A key element of the course will be utilising and developing your research skills. You will research contemporary British designers who use digital print in their collections, identifying their trademark characteristics.

You will explore the birth of the digital print trend during London Fashion week looking at designers including Alexander McQueen, Mary Katrantzu, Peter Pilotto, Basso & Brooke and Giles Deacon. You will learn how to incorporate such elements into your own work to give it a distinctive style.

Research will also include a trip to key British stockists (Dover Street Market, Browns, Liberty, Harvey Nicolas) to enable you to capture the current British Fashion scene. You will also do research trips to the V&A, as well as East London studios, stores galleries and nightlife. Research will be captured in your sketchbook, through drawings, photos, test samples, fabric swatches and notes.

During the course you will start to turn your two dimensional concepts into 3D prototypes and textile prints. There will be drawing workshops, which will help you to develop your individual fashion drawing style.

The course will take you through a series of individual and group tutorials and by the end of the week you will have created a significant portfolio of work and designed samples of textile prints inspired by London and your research.


Copenhagen

In continuation of the your design work in London, you will research the Danish/Scandinavian lifestyle and the strong tradition of Danish design including surfaces, colours and materials, which also influences the contemporary Danish Fashion designers. Research will include a trip to key Danish stockist like Normann Cph, Hay, Henrik Vibskov, Wood Wood and Stine Goya. You will also do research trips to the Danish Design museum as well as collective design studios stores, galleries and nightlife. Research will be captured in your sketchbook, through drawings, photos, souvenirs, test samples, fabric swatches and notes.

During the course you will start to experiment with prints, proportions and scale on the body and turn your two dimensional concepts into digital textile prints and 3D prototypes.

By the end of the week you will have designed a collection of 6 looks inspired by the work you completed as you have explored the topic, and seen through the eyes of the Scandinavian lifestyle and the Danish design tradition. The looks will be properly illustrated and accompanied by extensive research, colour palette supplemented with additional fabric research, prints and fabric manipulation.
