The woodcutter (or woodcutter) is an ancient profession, still practiced today, typically carried out by the inhabitants of mountain areas covered by woods and forests. The activity, of very ancient origins, consists in the cutting of the forest, mainly state-owned, according to the criteria of silviculture (e.g. coppice or tall forest, cutting of sick, old, dry, burnt, unsafe plants, etc.) , with the wood obtained destined for use or consumption by the inhabitants of the place mainly as firewood or sold to third parties. Often before the actual cutting took place the so-called marking or marking of the plants which instead were appropriately selected so as not to be cut down. The tools used ranged from hand saws to more modern chainsaws. Together with the equally well-known figures of the charcoal burner and the craftsman, they contributed to the so-called wood economy. To date, the figure of the lumberjack has been replaced by similar specialized professional figures. In most cases, those who chose to undertake this type of work on an ongoing basis were moved by a visceral passion handed down from father to son, such as to partially mitigate the daily hardships and difficulties. These men, after a hard apprenticeship spent setting up the trunks, were generally responsible for the most experienced and professional works, such as the felling of trees and the construction of the rice fields.
